The SpaceX Post Progress Meter

JULY 16

A lot of readers have been emailing about the somehow-still-not-finished SpaceX post, so I’m going to just keep anyone who’s interested updated with the progress here.

WBW posts are long, but normally that means 3,000 – 8,000 words. Two posts so far have gone to a whole other insane level—the two-part AI post (24,000 words) and the Tesla post (26,000 words). SpaceX will join them to complete the trifecta of short books that are for some reason on a blog.

Normally, a post process goes like this:

1) Pick a topic

2) Start brainstorming/researching

3) Hit the first “Wait this is hard” wall and change topics

4) Pick a new topic, repeat Steps 2 and 3, returning to the original topic

5) Brainstorm/Research/Pace back and forth in despair

6) Outline—take all the scattered thoughts from Step 5 and design a post, making all the decisions about structure, themes, general angle, etc etc. This is the hardest part and sometimes drags on for many days in a row before it finally clicks.

7) Write

8) Draw

9) Read the whole thing, making minor changes and fixing typos

10) Other annoying shit—citations, sources, formatting, tags, etc. etc.

11) Publish

Depending on how much pre-learning I need to do, how long I hit a wall in Step 6 before it clicks, how long the post is, how many drawings there are, and how much the monkey bullies me throughout the process, getting from Step 1 to Step 11 will take anywhere from 1-3 weeks.

A super-long post is a different thing all together. Step 5 is far more involved than it normally is, and rather than do Steps 5-8 in a nice sequential order, they need to be inter-spliced and done in parts. Step 6 is where long snags happen, but usually, once I get by it, I’m by it—in this case, because Step 6 happens again and again for each section and subsection, random three-day walls have ample opportunity to pop up. Further not helping the situation, with a post this long and built up, my already debilitating perfectionism is on steroids.

fLike the Tesla post, SpaceX will have three parts. As of last night, I was finishing up writing Part 2, but then this morning I looked at Part 2 and realized it should have been structured differently (because I came up with something better as I wrote it that I hadn’t thought of when I planned it, which happens sometimes), so now I’m starting Part 2 again. Kill me.

That doesn’t mean I’m one-third of the way through the whole process. The meat of the gargantuan Steps 5 and 6 are behind me already, so I’d say we’re 80% of the way there.

I’ll keep this updated each day till the post is up.

• Rachel

looking forward to this one, Tim! Keep up the hard work.

• Dimitri Aiello

Take your time, Tim. We’re all eager for the post, but we know it`ll worth the wait.
Just don`t go full panic on this.

• Harel Thapro Yee

Tim what you’re doing is a huge favor for humanity! Thanks for being awesome!:)

• Lee Thaubald

Better to get it right than publish with lots of errors or incomplete information.
Kind of like Tesla and the oft-delayed Model X. Better to get it right than put it out too early and need to recall and make corrections.

• Alexander Mytelka

Tim, frankly, this is bullshit. A long time reader, I don’t think I’ll be able to keep coming back if posts continue to take… just kidding, take your time man. We all know it’ll be worth the wait, like always. You are legitimately writing high quality books here, don’t forget that. Thanks for the updates.

• Luisa

Who else thinks the whole “I’ll keep this updated each day” is another self fulfilling fail Tim is setting up for himself?

Along with the dinner table (awesome) post on favourite procrastination playgrounds, it seems Tim’s Monkey is having a blast!

• Whole_New_World

Tim, we get it. No worries. These things insanely great! They take time.

In the meanwhile, I’ve distracted myself:

1. Signed up for your Patreon (for a miniscule amount that somehow allows me to think that I’m part of this whole thing.)

2. Bought Ashlee Vance’s “Elon Musk,” and amazingly am 1/2 way through it. (Which is pretty incredible, as I haven’t finished a book since “Green Eggs and Ham”)

So, you’re changing stuff, for very real. Worth the wait.

• Roy Bhutt

The book literally changed my life. I read it and saw some ( a lot) of the clippings of musk on YouTube. his attitude affected my thought process, my ides, my goals the way I looked at world. Went for an interview ( after 3 rejects in slimier positions in other companies since November) and got selected.

• fliptherain

Tim! We have faith in you. We love your posts because of the hard work. Plus, your hard work adds to your credibility.

Alsoooooooooo if you need an assistant I will work for you ASAP. I got awesome doodle skills.

• Reijen1988

Tim, been reading for awhile now. I get that these novella-sized posts take a long time, but that’s the beauty of it.
Gems like these take time, so take time. It is always worth the wait.

• Tim

“Like the Tesla post, SpaceX will have three parts.” I thought the Tesla post was two parts (Raddest Man, and Change the World), is this a typo or did I miss one?

Looking forward to reading about SpaceX. I love the blog.

• Dulcie

“Elon Musk: The World’s Raddest Man” is a general introduction to Elon Musk and all the things he’s done. It does not count as part of the Tesla post, because it deals w/ more than Tesla.
“How Tesla Will Change The World” is the only Tesla post. If you open it and scroll a little bit, you’ll see it says Parts 1, 2, and 3 (The Story of Energy, Cars, and Tesla).

• Titanius55

Whenever the post comes out I will read it! Whether that is tomorrow or in like seven months.

• I don’t mind waiting when the posts end up as awesome as they do. I love the short book format.

• Vysakh S

Take your time, Tim. We aren’t going anywhere. And to be honest, it’s nice when a new post suddenly appears on the website without warning. Sort of like a pleasant surprise. So a progress bar or a status update isn’t really needed in my opinion but hey, it’s all good whichever way.

• Kyle Anderson

I noticed that apparently almost everyone commenting on this is on a first name basis with you. This morbidly depressing realisation has stolen just enough of my already paper thin self confidence and successfully pushed me, head first, into a rabbit hole of self loathing and hatred. Thanks for becoming well acquainted with everyone in the comments below and leaving me alone to rot in the corner. You all probably go out for drinks and talk about what a loser I am. All the best with your post, articles on this site sometimes feel like the only things on the internet worth reading.

• drew mueller

Thanks for more ammunition to mock you at the next meet up.

• Victor

Seriously, I know it’ll be worth the wait. I don’t care how long it takes. When I see these posts, i can easily gauge the insane amounts of research, planning, structuring and re-structuring that went into making such quality essays. So, please, Tim, don’t sweat the heat your getting for the supposed late-ness. I know that to make exactly what you have in mind will take a lot of time. So, write and ponder slowly, to your heart’s content. I really appreciate your writings. I also know that if the posts hadn’t taken you as long as it did to write them then they wouldn’t be as great as they are. Also, if it were me, I’d feel annoyed with this daily progress on the post thing you’re doing. i’d feel kind of like a hostage to it. So I don’t need to see some sort of daily progress thing.

• hasenhasso

In 2014 WBW-posts once a week, in 2015 once a month, in 2016 once a …

I like the ’15-posts very much, so not too bad for me to go in that direction. =)

love u

• Pratik Mehta

The SpaceX post is going to be Tim’s seventh symphony. I can smell it.

• Roy Bhutt

What are the other 6

Lemme guess

1. AI
2. Fermi Paradox
3. What makes you, you
what are the remaining 6

• Jayden Park

It’s a phrase that roughly means “magnum opus”
cause Beethoven’s seventh symphony…ya know?

• Roy Bhutt

cool Thanks!

I personally believe no other post could be better than the three named above in that order of awesomeness, but yeah lets see

• Rich1983

I agree completely with the first 2. The Fermi Paradox is what I stumbled across before I knew what this site was. I didn’t imagine I’d like another post even better than that one, but then I read AI. I probably have to put “Religion for the Nonreligious” as my third favorite though, especially since it impacted the way I try to live.

If you were looking for two other posts on par with “what makes you, you” in terms of gaining perspective, I’m sure it’s different for everyone, but I would put “Putting time in perspective” up there, and “From Muhammed to ISIS,” a topic I was excited to learn more about. I would put Tesla up near the top now too.

• Roy Bhutt

Will read religion for non religious then, thanks

• Luisa

the procrastination one(s) and tesla. Oh, that’s already 7.

• Rich1983

Nick, I thought about the idea of publishing parts separately too – but, like Tim explained, sometimes as you write you get new ideas, better ideas, and you end up rewriting earlier stuff so that it fits the new narrative. I guess I wouldn’t be comfortable publishing until everything was done either. Plus, thinking about the Tesla post, it would have been a little weird (even misleading) to make an individual Tesla post that only talked about energy and said nothing of Tesla. It could be especially confusing for people who aren’t constantly checking in on this site like addicts (me). Someone who just happens by for the first time expecting to read about Tesla and learning instead about energy or the history of cars may not be likely to come back despite whatever notes Tim might include at the end of the article. Makes better sense to release it altogether.

On that note, I would be willing to wait much longer if it meant being rewarded with another of the high quality posts we are accustomed to, and judging by the comments here, everyone seems to agree. I was worried I would see some George Martin-esque criticisms in the comments section, but thankfully this little community is overwhelmingly positive, especially considering this is the internet. It’s refreshing to be able to scroll down to the bottom of a page without shuddering.

• Dennis Lee

Truly putting the wait in waitbutwhy

• Sarah

Go with monkey over mammoth every time, too much work will harm you and then we won’t get any posts.

• girly freak

As Tim is a procrastinator needing the pressure of time, I need to be the one creating it.

Tim, you’re already late! Shame on you!

• Paul Steven Conyngham

Tim mate, the Tesla post was too long. Why don’t you release the SpaceX one as three separate parts, kinda like the AI one ? Was actually quite a good read that way round. Cheers, for all your great work so far bud, love reading WBW. Paul

• Matt

Someone else has asked a similar question and the general response was; remember the tesla post? If that was posted as three separate posts it would be confusing, even misleading, to call a post “how tesla will change the world” and then just read about how electricity works. The other issue was, Tim tends to change the format and overall narrative a lot during the writing as said at the top of this post, so posting and re-posting, fixing and changing posts is way harder than just taking his time with the long posts. I like the long style, it gives me time to really get immersed in the wise words of this god among bloggers.

• Paul Steven Conyngham

“how tesla will change the world part 1: how electricity works”. But yup, I don’t really care, either way i’m going to read it 🙂

• Gwilym Panda Newton

You realize your procrastinating, by posting pictures of your progress right?

I dont actually mind if your late if your SpaceX post. I would rather have your usual brillent article as late as normal, than have you rust it.

• Ashley Wilsey

As excited as I am about a SpaceX post, I’m waaaaay too amused by the running updates. (Also, the SpaceX post will automatically swallow an afternoon and I’m pretty sure I don’t have one of those to spare this week. So I applaud the delay!)

• Robert

Maybe you should just have waitbutwhy as a sixe project for small, funny posts and then write actual books. I am certainly not the only one who would buy 20 copies of one of your books.

• Robert

*Side.

• Brandon

these MS paint drawings are one of my favourite parts of your posts Tim, keep ’em coming!

• Whole_New_World

Love that Part 3 has announced its presence with authority!

• MV

The stick figure drawings are hilarious. I hope that Part 2 didn’t really poke you in the eye when you hog tied it.

• Anurag Puranik

Logging in everyday just to look at these stick figure. They are funny!

• davide

Part 3 is really mean.

• anonymous user

watching these parts beat you up is a little too funny…

• LLG

hahahaha, Part 3 owning Tim

• Harpreet Singh Sandhu

Thanks for keeping us posted Tim. Before this i got depressed everytime i checked on WBW and found no spacex post

• disqus_dor1YsFNCG

Yeah, seeing that frikin ‘red monster’ day after day is an ordeal. But this cartoon series is nice.

• Roy Bhutt

Tim Once you are completely finished please let it stay there for a day before you publish it, let it breath. don’t feel any pressure from us. Believe me the later it is the better it is.
Also please publish it only on weekend so that you do not help compromise the work ethics of office workers, in addition to hurting the global GDP.

• LLG

Do the checkmate Tim!

• Hallohallo

I’d rather have more cartoons than the post.

• Lindsey Crawford

Is anyone else finding themselves weirdly hoping Tim goes long overdue on this so we can see more of the anthropomorphized-cartoon-post saga?

• Be careful promising the 80% done! We all know how well that worked for George RR Martin with “A Dance of Dragons”

• Jo.C

Maybe, all after all this and with the SpaceX post finally up, Tim can consider dedicating one full post documenting this great battle. Maybe.

• Delly

Look, tim’s even late with the updates (it’s technically monday, and sunday’s update isn’t here) 🙁 you must really be swamped over with the spacex post. I really think you should take a break after you post the spacex article, okay?

• anonEemous

I can understand the spaceX post taking a bit longer, after all Tim is going to literally explain rocket science.

• Alex Mac

This is just a suggestion, but with these long posts you should publish each part as a post. Also, when you’re done with all the Elon Musk posts you should combine it into a full length book.

• quadrplax

The problem with releasing the parts individually is, as you can see in today’s update image, he may want to change some things in Part 1 or Part 2 to make it go better with Part 3. Also, then the first 2 posts for Tesla would have nothing to do with Tesla. The book is a good idea though.

• Nicolas Diaz

Any day now, CANT WAIT

• Vikram Kalra

So glad I chose 1000 years for the Dinner Table conversation on how long you would like to live. My hope is to read the SpaceX post as I take my final breaths. hahaha…i kid. Excited and love watching the process as much as I love reading your posts.

• Abhishek Balaji

CAN’T WAIT!

I didn’t get any response to the email I fired you a month back, I thought you’d be really busy with the post back then, but after a month long agonizing wait, I finally think the post is almost in the bag. Don’t forget to hit me back after you post!

Love from India!

• LLG

Fitness time for Part 1 and 2. hahahaha

• Nicolas Diaz

Oh no… its tipping

• sacocheio

Tim, did you notice that people are coming here in a daily basis (not weekly) just to follow your wonderful comic strip?

It’s strange, but I’ll be a little sad when this progress status come to an end. 🙂

• Las10

Or maybe we’d like a similar progress report for the next Garangutan. Oh yeah, draw the gigantic posts like an Orangutan, and call them Garangutans. *grins*

• Taylor H

Classic misdirection by Tim. Part 3 never saw it coming.

• Aletta

Bloated content normally gets the axe, the chainsaw, or the hacksaw in my world. I have a bad feeling for those little content cherubs.

• qwerty

They got scissored XD

• LLG

Best Progress Bar Ever!
And probably the slowest to change status ever too. Hahahaha
Good Job Tim. You should do this on each post.
Or try to create a new area on the site where you tell a story with one stick figure drawing each day.

Good lucky with the cutting and waiting anxiously for the post!

• Ravion

Tim, ya pull an all nighter and fall asleep at your keyboard? =P

• Luisa

I don’t know what part 3 did, but it is winning Tim for 2 days now.

• confused

where did 7/28 go?

• Vinay Kapadia

Those puffed up part 1/2 guys are the cutest thing ever. I don’t even want you to cut them, I just want to see all of them!

• Vinay Kapadia

Plus the look on your face when you realized how big they’ve gotten is priceless.

• not confused anymore

there it is!

• Ravion

Where what is?

• You guys are awesome. This progress meter only makes me like this blog — ahem, “content website” — even more.

• Pedro Ferraz

Ummm.. I think I know Tim’s idea.. he’ll split part 2 into 2 parts!

• Alex Mac

I’m starting to get into a habit of checking this comic strip

• LLG

Dat Part 2…

• Mohsin Ismail

I’m just waiting for the comic strip update in which Part 3 somehow escapes

• anonymous user

Is anyone else seeing the page glitched out?

• Patrick Oliveras

Seems like the module that manages languages got messed up and is printing all options at once… just that… there are no translations. Welp.

• Simon Bækkegaard

What is going on now? Miniature versions of part1&2 in part 2’s hand, and what is the paint for?
Can’t wait until tomorrow for the next chapter in this epic tale

• Juggernaut93

Maybe he put the “extra text” into a couple of blue boxes in Part 2.

• Davy Gump

I’m trying to finish all the work I have to do before the post came out, it’s literally a race against time

• Pedro Ferraz

Part 1 looks angry because of part 2 legs

• Guest

Please Tim try creating a real comic strip at some point in your career.

• Frank Qi

Do you really trust part 2 enough to untie his hands? wont he just flip out, throw away the puffy ones and hit you in the head with a baseball bat?

BTW, i would love to translate the upcoming post into Chinese, but not quite sure whether i have free time for that or not

• Neil Cash

Wait But Why has Chinese translations. I am English and did a degree in Chinese- I first read these posts in English and then in Chinese as a kind of review/study opportunity. So much more interesting than the generic texts we were given in our textbooks!

• Frank Qi

very nice way to learn Chinese. I am Chinese and an incoming UC Berkeley freshman.. but isn’t the Chinese version here (http://waitbutwhy.com/cn) quite outdated?

• Ashley Wilsey

I probably shouldn’t have giggled so hard at Part 1’s single tear…

• Neil Cash

Does anyone else suspect that Tim has just headed off to some Floridian island with the riches he has accrued from Patreon and is just keeping himself busy with the comic strip? 🙂

• João Pedro Gonçalves

That thought hunts me every night.

• anonymous user

That head paint… Part 3 deserves it though.

• Dan

You should do these for every post. Unless they get boring. Or take too long to do. Or become just another way for you to procrastinate.

• Drew LeBow

A narration of the events so far:
Tim wrangles with Part 2, who was beating him senseless. Eventually, however, he manages to tie down his arms and legs and then stacks him on top of Part 1, already defeated.

However, behind Tim approaches the much more clever Part 3, who gets his head in a bag and begins beating him. Tim, however, rips open the bag and fights back. They decide to settle it through a chess match. Even though it appears to be a stalemate, Tim refuses to lose, fair or not, and distracts 3 in time to beat him with a chair. Unfortunately, this causes 3 to break up into multiple pieces, which Tim has to put back together. After a lot of work, he finally stacks 3 on top of 1 and 2, proud.

Unfortunately, his pride is short-lived, as he realizes that 1 and 2 have become too bloated. He removes pieces of 1 to bring him back to being slender. As he decides to do the same operation with 2, he has a stroke of genius! Once done cutting up 2 into a slender being, he takes the parts of 1 and 2 that were cut and gives them to 2 to hold. He then begins painting 3 orange, perhaps in order to split him up?

• Jacob

I think the orange paint is meant to say that he’s making the three parts one post. Maybe it’s glue?

• Las10

Or formatting. Making all the three parts go together instead of them being fragmented as part-1, part-2, part-3, and being completely disjointed from each other.

• Dan

I thought it meant that he’s in the drawing phase.

• Trickyboy

I think this is super creative! It’s fun to see the progress. But are you painting or gluing part1 and part2?

• anonymous user

Is the paint the final touch?

• because_stickers

Hilariously, no!

• Optimistic Eric

The last update image will be a big orange middle finger and Tim’s suicide.

• hallohallo

His ‘suicide’. We all know it’s the green one in the middle that done him in.

• Ermine Worm

Remember that during the creation of this post there was a vast explosion centred upon a SpaceX rocket. That may have affected the writing process in some way 🙂

• Las10

That must have been the Cherubs. you know, cutting, adding, changing a little of the content. If my analyses of Waitbutwhy posts is correct, Part 2 must be dealing with the current situation & goings-on of SpaceX & how it works and the explosion along with the causes & revelations resulting from it would have added to the content already there, fattening the parts (not sure how it would have affected Part 1 though). Part 3 would deal with its implications, the future (road map), its consequences & results etc.

• sabs546

Whoops I was meant to post here

• Pedro Ferraz

The waiting is almost done.. anytime this week =)

• Victor

This procrastinating thing of yours really seems to be taking over. A tip might be to skip the prognosis of coming posts completely, to avoid stress and frustration.

• girly freak

You don’t want his posts, huh? 😀

• Victor

Ofc I do and I understand that it’s only a privilege to get to read them for free and therefore have no right to complain. 😉
Although I think it would save both Tim and maybe some readers a bit frustration if his planning for future posts became a bit more realistic and generous.
My obsession of visiting this site every day for new material is only a sign of my great appreciation for his work.

• maximkazhenkov11 .

I think the point he’s trying to make is that the prognosis of coming posts which Tim keeps updating is the ONLY thing that keeps his procrastination tendency in check. Without this pressure, nothing would get done, ever 😉

• girly freak

Yes, this is my point, thank you 🙂

• LLG

Maybe Tomorrow?

• qwerty

*pretends doesn’t know timezones*

Today is third not second 😉

• Ahwal

4th here already. *really doesn’t understand time zones*

• thespaceXpost

ooh the 5th
*time zones knowledge limited*

• predunuku

Blue circles and gray squares stage?

• Ella

Tim, your legs have shrunk!!

• Pepperice

Stickers! I love stickers. I have no idea how stickers relate to this. I can’t wait to find out 😀

• Robert

He’s drawing the pictures for it.

• Pepperice

OOOH. I hope so! 🙂

• Las10

Yay step 8! if it takes 8/3 and 8/4 for step 8, and 8/5 for step 9 & 10 (that is if this is the only thing that Tim does in a day) it should be here on Thursday!

• Saif

Why is Tim looking sad suddenly? Surely, applying the stickers can’t be depressing….

• Neil Cash

Have you seen how many stickers there are?

• hallohallo

Our boi has a problem

• rUUd

Everyone is getting a lesson in patience here. Not that it’s a bad thing.

• the post is still not out yet?

last post was 3 weeks ago!

• LLG

Today is the day Tim?

• B

… That spacex post will probably never come along 🙁

• Stakh

Oh, boy… This part 2 arm doesn’t look good at all…

• MicroMatrixx

Why do you do this part 2. WHY!!!!!

• Juggernaut93

“Wait But Why”

• drew mueller

Yes, the “Wait” in Wait but why is more important than it seems at first view 😛

• Frank Qi

Remember my comment about “untying part 2’s hand?” I am not going to say “I told you so…”
Soon he will scratch off all the dried paint and dip your head into the paint can 🙁

• hallohallo

The saga continues

• Whole_New_World

On my limited intellectual capacity:
I’ve been a pretty confused since the Chess Match.

• Undonewings1

I imagine it like this:
Chess match = Thinking how to tackle part 3, then starts figuring it out (7/25 – 7/26)
Then he starts putting all three parts together and starts to think parts 1 and 2 are a little too much (7/27). So let’s cut down on the blue guy (7/28). Now what to do with green guy now that blue guy is set, he has an idea (7/29)! So he balances everything out on 7/30. Now to polish things up (7/31 – 8/1). Now add graphics to the paper (8/2 – 8/3). Then yesterday (8/3) he noticed something wrong with green guy.

• Oh, Come on!

Pure orange is good enough, call it done already!
Those zombies inside will keep grabbing you.

• Harpreet Singh Sandhu

Tim, i am afraid you are risking sky high expectations from your readers now. the more we all wait, the more we expect it to be earth shattering.
I just hope this post crosses our expectations. In any case, thanks for putting in the efforts and best of luck..

• Vikram Kalra

Personally, my expectations of great posts by Tim is always sky high. And I’ve never been let down.

• Dan

“The SpaceX post is coming along, but won’t be up this week. Should be coming week of 7/6.”
Little did we know, he actually meant the week of 7/6/2016.

• Las10

Aww Tim! Don’t get sucked in by Part-2! Focus Focus 🙂

• Juggernaut93

Tim posts SpaceX updates at about 6 a.m. EDT.
Now there are two options:
1) He wakes up very early in the morning.
2) He doesn’t even sleep to fix the SpaceX post.
Either way, poor Tim :/

• Juggernaut93

loltimezones

• Marthinus Bosman

Will Tim finally defeat the dreaded SpaceX post?
Tune in next week to Dragon Ball Z!!!

• LLG

HAhahaha, i really laugh with the last one.
So, today is the day?

• begzy

O please let it be today, its holiday here today and I am bored!

• Nicolas Diaz

Holiday where?

• begzy

Croatia. Sorry for the late response

• Frank Qi

I can see the slight smile on Tim’s face… It’s coming!

• Chris

He is finishing drawing, which is step 8 out of 11. He still has to fix typos and do citations and other annoying shit….

• anonymous user

When?! WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEENNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN????!!!!!!!!!!!

• Ahwal

But but but… Where’s the monkey??

• Ahwal

Reminds me of waiting for the Harry Potter books

• Pedro Ferraz

I dreamt I was reading the SpaceX article hahaha.. I dont remember being so anxious about reading something since when I was 15 and waiting for the next HP book.

• C

I can feel it, it is almost here!!!!

• Dimitri Aiello

This shits is long as f…
My excitement for this is long as f…

• rUUd

woohoo!

• MicroMatrixx

O pls let it be today. I can hardly sleep.

• asdfgh

inby tomorrow :p

• anonymous user

So… close…

• begzy

Don’t know if site is slow because everybody is hitting refresh button, or if Tim is uploading wall of text

• Chris

I can’t wait to binge-read this thing 3 times through and start waiting for the next post!

• qwerty

Its so close as your own f 😀

• Radu Diaconescu

Sooooo cloooooose

• Gemma

I never write comments on articles or discussions on blogs. Never! I don’t know what I am doing! I am beside myself with anticipation for this post. That is all.

• theimpatient

Oh gosh it’s close! Tim, just write faster! We’re 3 letters left! 😀

• Sheky

Wow. The most anticipated post in thr history of WBW. EXCITED BEYOND ANY WORDS.

• Max Kraft

It’s time, it’s time to post! Come on! Is it here? Or am I just dumb?

• Ella

I feel this will be awesome. Although I kind of want to know what was in the arm… Even though I’m guessing I’ll have a few words to get through:) so excited!!!!

• JH1010

No update for 6th August yet?

• Max Kraft

Also wondering. Looks like it’s gonna be here in an hour or so.

• Alex

Please be true!

• Juggernaut93

Maybe the post is almost ready and is going to be released today.

• JH1010

Alas, no.

• Siddharth Patel

What’s that grey thing at the place he chopped the hand off? Is that another hand coming out?

• Las10

Duct tape.

• Burkay Soylu

Fixes everything, ya know.

• _nthony

Hurry the fા up, Chris!

• Las10

I live how the drawings evolved from stick figures to solid colors and details and transparent layers.

• Patching it up?? And what’s that purple paint bucket? Not another layer of paint please… we want to read this thing!!

• andrea

Seems like he’s moving it

• Chris

Or polishing it? The entire left side is a slightly different color.

• Saif

Pushing it, methinks. Going by the feet.

• D Sáez

Good point! I also thought he was pushing it to move and I was afraid it will lean over and eventually overturn causing it to break into a thousand pieces…hope not to be its fate.

• Max Kraft

OH COME ON!

• Colm Hennessy

Can I just say how much I’ve enjoyed these updates. Come the publication of the SpaceX post, I’m going to miss this titanic struggle.

• Heather

Dito

• Oli Graves

I started reading (well listening to) Superintelligence at the beginning of this wait, I’m beginning to wonder if I’ll have it finished by the time this is out! I keep checking every day and I’m beyond excited but I actually have no problems with the length of the wait as long, I’m sure all the effort will be worth it!

• Hiro

I hope he follows up the Space X post with a mini post that explains what the hell was going on in these progress meter cartoons.

• Ri Ri

Yes, I’m concerned about the gentleman’s legs in the August 5th update #abuseOfstickFigures

• Jeroen Bargeman

I really hope those stripes in the orange paint aren’t suppose to be cracks….

• Pedro Ferraz

Dont worry about the cracks.. a beatifull butterfly of 50.000 words will came out.. at least looks like a cacoon.

• Mike Manko

He’s sanding it down

• disqus_dor1YsFNCG

Thanks for telling us 😀

• Richard Bryan

I think he is polishing it into a rocket

• Phil L

I don’t like that purple paint bucket…

• Ri Ri

I’m afraid many of us have unrealistic expectations for the SpaceX post. Yes, Tim’s posts are awesome and we’ve been waiting over a month for this coming post, but we need to recognize that this long wait is simply a function of the post’s length (maybe 30,000 words?) and not anything else. Reading this post will not mindfuck us into a higher state of consciousness.
Reality – Expectations = Happiness/Satisfaction

• Luisa

most of previous posts have mindfucked me into consciousness. So my bets are still on.

• N3vertheless

Is Tim polishing a turd? It looks like a turd.

• Luisa

hey, polish it long enough and it will get really shiny…

• FirstChimp

You can’t polish a turd. You could, however, sand it down then paint it and roll it in glitter.

• D

Soo, a tomorrow to finish the polishing and a day or to for the purple paint bucket? So two to three days for now… this is frustrating 🙁

• Harpreet Singh Sandhu

oh come on now…at least let us know the date at this point..

• Vivid

Listen, Tim! I am at a point where I don’t really care about what’s fair or what not. If I don’t see it by tomorrow, I am gonna call….somebody…..or I am going to…you know….do something…or…
Argh! who am I kidding! I am helpless.

• NavelFluff

So Tim, what’s the deal? Keep us hyped and boost the Patreon income?

Have you ever seen Monty Python’s ‘Quest for the holy grail’..? You’ll remember the quote;

“Get on with it…!!!”

😉

• Ri Ri

WaitButCry until the post goes up 😛

• Mohsin Ismail

Even though we all have been waiting for more than a month now…you gotta hand it to Tim. Dude’s writing a book in a matter of weeks. I’ll take that over daily clickbait-y buzzfeed articles any day.

• rUUd

Just do it man. Just do it.

• RooD

Looks like hes going to make rocket

• Can’t wait!

rEED

• Frank Qi

when i saw “Little extra shit,” i thought ‘Shiiiiiiiit’!!!!

• Frank

I better don’t find a single fucking misspelled word in that post Tim!
This is getting ridiculous

• Frank Qi

Wait, what? Why? i mistook your post as mine^-^

• Abhishek Balaji

POST IT MAN! Seriously, Tired of waiting!

• Tiago

This is the most exciting part of my day. I’ll be sad when it’s over.
That being said, I think tonight’s the night. It is done. The last step is completed. The SpaceX Post will arrive.

FINALLY!!!

• Björn Rúnar Guðmundsson

Guess its a firework and will explode when hes finished

• Björn Rúnar Guðmundsson

I bet this will be 3 hour read 😀

• Juggernaut93

Only 3?

• Juggernaut93

If you are fast reader that is :p

• Juggernaut93

It took me roughly 10 hours to read the Tesla post, mainly because I followed nearly every link on that page (Musk’s videos, data websites, etc.)

• Ichi_the_Blind

With any of this site’s longer, meatier posts, I end up devoting a good 6 hours at least. With his masterpieces, like the AI posts, I might spend a whole day, maybe even two. Basically for the same reason as you.

• qwerty

Ah that would explain – I was just glancing what is in links.

• marisheba

I’m a day late on this, but does anyone else think the polishing drawing sort of looks like the post has turned into a giant middle finger that is flipping Tim off? I love these cartoons, and that one is now double the fun for me.

Glad to see it’s finally coming together Tim, but you’re still free to take as much time as you need to feel you’ve got this puppy fully in the bag. We all know it’ll be worth the wait, and though you really don’t owe us anything, you’ve still managed to make that wait so much more entertaining with your usual great visual storytelling.

• Praetor

Thought this is a relevant quote for everyone melting over their keyboards.

“It’s like power laws. An A++ is going to get shared 1,000 times more than an A+, which gets shared 1,000 times more than an A. Tim really gets all the credit because he has just this absolutely maniacal switch where he’ll put 40 hours into something and it will be an A, and then he’s the guy who has that extra 40 hours in the tank to pull two all-nighters just to turn it into an A++.
It just gives that extra level of engagement that makes someone so compelled that they want to tell people about it,” says Finn.”

Creds to Tim for doing this for free. Love the site. No rush.

• Kirigaya Kazuto

Not so free anymore – Remember Patreon 🙂 But it’s still worth it.

• I Clicked The Turtle

If I could read this Magnum Opus tomorrow morning while drinking fresh coffee, it would be a great start for a Sunday 🙂

• qwert

Today is sunday >.>

• JH1010

9 hours ago it wasn’t Sunday.

• JH1010

That was sarcasm :p #timezones

• jimmy wobbler
• its gonna be a long night

Buger and i was gonna get an early night tonight!

• Tiago

Yeah what’s up with that?

• E

Its getting to a point now where I can’t mentally function properly before I know when this post is coming up… It’s making me insane!

• Ella

Damn got so excited today as I checked this page this afternoon (not obsessively or anything…) and it came up with a “page not found” and then the link to the SPACEX POST CAME UP…. and it didn’t work:(((((

• Frank Qi

Exactly, maybe he posted it and then thought “emmmm, this part doesn’t seem quite right……”

• nightowl

I went through the exact same experience and I jumped right out of bed to see if it was my phone browser problem or not. Sadly, it wasn’t and I have been obsessively reloading the main page. Just got back to check if the meter was back and here I am 🙁 Come on Tim you can do this!

• String userName=new String();

Yeah, at one point he (accidentally, I’m guessing) released an incomplete version with few missing paragraphs, pictures, etc.

• Ahwal

Tim needs some sleep

• [email protected]

Hopefully he read my comments about “bugs” in that article 😀

• Frank Qi

Almost forgot, Please do not remove this page after posting that “long ass shit”… We want to remember this epic struggle! Go Tim!

• Fangirl from delhi

Seconded

• Ri Ri

Thirded

I also kinda want to see the content of that arm thing he cut off…

• ssdfasfsgafdgdfshghshdfgshghsg

One… Day…. More…..

• Mohsin Ismail

40,000 word post?!

• Max Kraft

We believe in you, Tim!

• Devery Sheridan

“It depends on the font you are using, of course, but in general, 250-300 words per page. Therefore, a 55,000 word book should be about 200 manuscript pages. A 100,000 word book would be about 400.” If Tim’s SpaceX post is 37,000 words which I saw somewhere, he’s basically creating a 100-150 page book depending on the font you’re using. That’s insane. Just over 2 months is a pretty short time for that. This is an amazing thing that Tim is doing for all of us.

• qwerty

Its morning for me GG one day mmore

• PurpleNurple

Yesterday before going to bed I checked this page. It was gone. So I excitedly checked if the SpaceX post was there. IT WAS. I was gonna read it today. Except now it’s gone, and this page is back up. You’re killing me Tim. But I refuse to give up and so I found a cached version, and here it is.

http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:http://waitbutwhy.com/2015/08/how-and-why-spacex-will-colonize-mars.html

• Juggernaut93

Oh god, I feel strange to read that before being officially online.

• Marthinus Bosman

No buddy, I’m incredibly impressed that you were able to get it, but I think you should delete it. None of the readers will have the discipline to not read it, and will regret it after they have. Maybe I’m wrong, but hopefully Tim will read this and give his opinion.

• Juggernaut93

The page has some bugs and missing pieces, so it’s better to wait for the final version (for me, at least).

• qwerty

Yep found 2 missing pictures and 2 bugs:
1. Orbits always go around center of orbited body.

2. Most of heat during reentry is from compression not friction.

• ssagg

Well
There was certainly an error in the lunar landing date so I gess it wasn´t completelly checked

• qwerty

I’ll read this now #noshame

And after its officially released.

• BWilson

Would be good for you to take this down. Pretty sure Tim would not want his work published in draft form. The final version will definitely be out soon. Please take down the link.

• String userName=new String();

That’s just a draft. You should delete the link.

• String userName=new String();

That’s just a draft. Tim probably put it up by accident. We’ve all waited this long; we can all wait a day or two more for the completed version. You should delete the link.

• qwerty

I finished reading it. It took me 3 hours to red it whole 😀

• quadrplax

In case anyone is wondering, the post is over 37,000 words

• edfromny

This is very tempting but I’m going to resist reading it. Then again my browser lagged for a whole 3 seconds when the thing loaded – so I know how big this thing is haha. I think that makes it easier to not be tempted into reading it; my Instant Gratification Monkey double-takes at the sheer length of it. I’ll wait for you to be done, Tim.

• Aaaaarghhhhh, fact checking now…. loads of fact checking! I am really excited to read this, Tim. Wtg!!!

• Juggernaut93

I was wondering… if it’s a four-part series, what will the next one be about? SolarCity? Or what?

• String userName=new String();

It won’t be SolarCity; he already did a mini-post on that. If I had to guess, I’d say it’ll probably be some kind of conclusion post wrapping everything up.

• nightowl

It shall be here probably by tomorrow! Come on guys, we can hold out for another day! 🙂

• Green

Just finished reading. The reentry part is not right, where he says it’s the airfriction that causes the high temperatures. Other than that it was quite interesting to read.

• anonymous user

ARGHHHHHHH, WHENNNNNNN?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

• E

“Nothing quick with a forty thousand word post”…. Forty-thousand!!! Holy shit that is insane, seriously that is like half the length of a book!!!

• Miguel Bartelsman

I’m pretty sure 40.000 words qualifies as a full book

• Pepperice

A novella, to be precise 🙂

• Dan

The SpaceX post is slated for release on the day that Half-Life 3 comes out.

• Pepperice

And it’s going to take 1.5 lifetimes to read XD

• Kro

This is the headline: How (and Why) SpaceX Will Colonize Mars

• Abhishek Balaji

@Kro: Yes, found it in the archives

• Ahwal

Where?? Nothing’s there now

• bambli

There is.

• disqus_dor1YsFNCG

Abe nahi hai yaar waha.

• Abhishek Balaji

Um, shaayad remove kar diya hoga! Damn!

• OfficialHypeTrain™

Did someone say FORTY THOUSAND WORDS?
*hyperventilates*

• Pepperice

Where is everyone getting the 40k figure from? 🙂 Excite!

• Pepperice

I found the article title via google listings. But I am stumped on this one. Halp!

• nickdodi

The article has been leaked yesterday.. it has around 37k words.

• disqus_dor1YsFNCG

So where is it?

• nickdodi

/r/spacex .. remember its a draft and not the final article !

• disqus_dor1YsFNCG
• nickdodi

I guess you’ll just have to wait it out in that case, buddy 🙂

• disqus_dor1YsFNCG

Hehe, yeah I’d wait now. It’s anyway time for me to sleep. 🙂

• Pepperice

Well, I’d rather wait and read Tim’s masterpiece in all its glory 🙂

• Excited

Read carefully at the very bottom of the ribbon

• Pepperice

Aha! Thank you! Why did I never notice before that I could click to embiggenate?

• Pepperice

And just look at those chess pieces!

• Not a Guest

Tim, people here notice your eyebrows! You do need to crosscheck all the facts carefully dude cuz we are obsessed!

• Not a Guest

Intentional or not, this has been a great PR exercise

• Jack Fleisher

I’ve never felt such anticipation for anything in a long time. The 8/9 picture better not have check marks 2/3 of the way down…

• Juggernaut93

It has actually, we have to wait another day.

• Jack Fleisher

Knew it!

• Erik Nyquist

Some published books with < 40k words …

29,966 – Animal Farm – George Orwell
39,540 – Divine Comedy – Dante Alighieri
24,588 – Pride & Prejudice – Jane Austen
30,644 – Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – Roald Dahl
36,363 – Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe – C.S. Lewis

• Chiel Wieringa

Cool, so we can expect a classic 🙂

• Ri Ri

80,000 word post… WTF!?!?!

• CtG

He should probably do this thing for all his posts from now on. Not only will this let readers know his progress, but I’m also positive that it will help him fight procrastination by wanting to report something each day.

• Max Kraft

yep i agree

• Abhishek Balaji

I know you don’t owe us anything, but, I’m really running out of patience now. Everytime I check the WBW’s homepage, I get disappointed! Seriously, why can’t you publish it. You’re what trying to create extremely high anticipation which in turn will drive your blog views?

Arrgh. Never mind. I didn’t mean that.

I’ve been tirelessly waiting for over 2 months now. And, it’s frustrating, without a publishing date. You can’t expect people to keep refreshing WBW and leave the site disappointed every time. Tell us the probably publishing date for all your future posts.

Publish this soon. Can’t wait.

• Sara Kilcher

I for one don’t mind the wait 🙂 I love the update timeline just as much!

• Pepperice

Are you paying Tim for this service? A significant amount, not a small contribution on Patreon? No? Then how on earth can you complain. You have the whole rest of the internet, and a significant amount of printed media, to read. He can’t publish it because read the damn post where he explains, you know, the one you are commenting on.

If you feel like you are disappointed then sign up for the emails and stop checking the site. Every so often a new post will ping right into your inbox and you’ll be surprised and happy!

This is not a site which has regular updates, and the content is superb because of it. Don’t knock it 🙂

• Abhishek Balaji

I agree man. I was kinda frustrated back then with the lack of any signs of the SpaceX post. But now, after reading the Fermi Paradox post, I feel I can wait even a week more. The quality of his articles is unmatchable!

• girly freak

It’s not that I completely disagree with you, but why is “a small contribution on Patreon” not similar to paying in another way? Paying about 3 dollars each month is quite the same as buying every two or 3 months one book.

This does not mean, that anyone would have the right to say “Post it faster!!!” or something like that.

• Pepperice

I meant more that supporting an author isn’t the same as employing somebody. If you employ somebody then you do, to some extent, have the right to ask them to work faster. If you are more of a passive customer then you waive that right. I was just trying to avoid the “Yes, I pay on patreon!” insistence, cos it isn’t the same thing as paying somebody specifically to do a service personally for you. Does that make sense?

• yogi

The post is about 40000 words long. Authors take years to come out with books of that length. It is awesome that Tim has done it in just two months.

Anyway, a rough version of the post is here in case you want to read it:

http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:zIOO_Tw18OgJ:waitbutwhy.com/2015/08/how-and-why-spacex-will-colonize-mars.html

• Abhishek Balaji

WOW I LOVE YOU YOGI!

• igoy

lol GG it leaked yesterday and Tim deleted it later :p

• Lilyburk

This is probably the most idiotic comment ever. You don’t pay them to finish this article. They don’t have to share all the knowledge they gathered and inform you. Then, what’s the point of this comment? Are you trying to be popular by going all out idiot? Well, you did it. Congratz.

Um, You should actually try going through all of the sub comments. In one sub comment (a reply actually) I did accept that my comment was weird. And, I BEGAN my comment by saying Tim doesn’t owe us anything.

“I agree man. I was kinda frustrated back then with the lack of any signs of the SpaceX post. But now, after reading the Fermi Paradox post, I feel I can wait even a week more. The quality of his articles is unmatchable!”

People like you, sir, unfortunately try to exploit a loophole in one bad comment without going through the entire comment thread. Anyway, now that he’s literally hours away from posting the article, I can’t allow anything to kill the excitement down.

• Colm Hennessy

I don’t think you understand what is meant by a “loophole”.

• Terminator

“loophole” – Focusing on one word/phrase which take the comment out of context.

Anyway, Let’s stop debating about this and talk about the upcoming article instead. All hail the internet! :p

• Colm Hennessy

Honestly, this kind of attitude online really bothers me.

This is a free service, provided by a single individual. It clearly takes a huge amount of time and effort, this effort shows in completed posts.

The author owes you absolutely nothing. You are not entitled to anything from him or this website. If it were to take another 6 months then so be it.

The entitlement complex behind this kind of thinking reminds me of my toddler!

• zero_ozero

“I know this is taking fucking for ever but after ten weeks I want to make sure to get it right, also being quick at things is not something a forty thousand word post is good at being”

Love you, Tim 🙂

AAAHHH… every day I check the update – and every day I think to myself: “so, tomorrow it’ll be there!”

• Not the Guest

Do you see all that anonymous comments?
They all were written by one guy #conspirancy

• CtG

For the lazy: Ten weeks I want 2 make sure 2 get it right also being quick at things is not something a forty thousand word post is good at being.

• Marthinus Bosman

Read the bottom part of the post silinder:
“Ten weeks. I want to make sure 2 get it right, also being quick at things is not something a forty thousand word post is good at being”

Maybe we should back off a bit and let Tim do his thing, does anyone really want a rushed post?

• Juggernaut93

You missed a piece in the penultimate “strip”: “I know this is taking fucking for ever but after” and it goes on with “ten weeks, etc.”

• Las10

Almost there almost there almost there almost there….

• Pedro Ferraz

40.000 words! OMG that’s delicious. I’m going to have to print this article so my eyes dont fry up reading on the monitor.

• quadrplax

That will take a lot of paper

• Saif

For a few weeks now, Tim seems to have worked on this pretty much non-stop, including weekends…Thanks Tim!!!

• Radu Diaconescu

When what you write becomes so important it gets leaked, you know you are doing something very right.

• Name

He leaked it himself.

• String userName=new String();

I can’t wait it’s almost here!!!!! Everyone I know will have to suffer through me talking about SpaceX and the this article for the next few weeks after it comes out.

In case anyone hasn’t noticed, Tim left us a few messages on the bottom of the cylinder. Together, they say: “Nothing is quick with a forty-thousand word post. I know this is taking fucking forever but after ten weeks I want 2 make sure 2 get it right also being quick at things is not something a forty thousand word long post is good at being.”

• Josiah Racchini

Nice catch with the cylinders, I didn’t even notice that!

• Alex Mac

Tim, according to Wikipedia a novel is more than 40,000 words, so you got to delay the process by a day to add something in and make it a true novel.

• Josiah Racchini

So close! Tim, I’m so happy to be a patron and reader of your blog. This is gonna be awesome! Keep chugging along little engine, you can do it!

• Abhishek Balaji

I just skimmed through the draft at: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:zIOO_Tw18OgJ:waitbutwhy.com/2015/08/how-and-why-spacex-will-colonize-mars.html

I didn’t read it though. Excited for the final article. I’ll take a fucking day off to read it!

• Tim (on the cylinder)

“I know this is taking fucking forever, but after 10 weeks I want 2 make sure 2 get it right; also being quick at things is not something a forty thousand word post is good at being.”

Straining my eyes to read the fact check ribbon is my new favorite DarkPlayground® activity. I’d love to see an update inside of the update inside of the update. Any way you can code a blue circle footnote in there?

• Pedro Ferraz

DarkPlayground®

LOL

• Steve

Skimmed the leak… looks great but I really hope this gets edited (spoiler, I guess): “Dawn is a pretty boring probe.” Understanding the asteroid and kuiper belts’ distribution and composition may very well lead to understanding how solar system formed and why we are around to chat about it.

• I can’t imagine writing a post that would take me over a month. I’d lose interest with it long before I hit 40k! Thanks for working so hard, can’t wait to be completely unproductive at work while reading it <3

• disqus_dor1YsFNCG

I watched a movie called ‘Interstellar’. Damm, it just drained me of my normal thinking. Did anyone of you watched that movie?
And I am worried what this Space-X post will do of me. 🙂

• Ri Ri

Murph….. MURPHH!!!!!! 😀

• Max Kraft

muuuuuuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrph

• Pedro Ferraz

I loved this movie. IMO Christopher Nolan is a great director. This movie had a huge impact for me as well. I went to see in a neighbor city (my city do not have a cinema =/), and it was wednesday, the movie finished about 1am, I went to sleep about 2:30am, and I had to wake up to work at 6am… but totally worth it!

• disqus_dor1YsFNCG

Yes, he is incredible. I borrowed a Dvd from a friend and I was surprised to find that this movie was released last year. Why didn’t I know about it before. What was I doing then? As I checked on internet, on Quora and elsewhere, lot of after-discussions and debating has gone into the movie by audience. And while I am still zapped by the Universe.dimension-space-thingy, this upcoming Space-X post might take this feeling to another level.

• Harpreet Singh Sandhu

something tells me this post wont come tomorrow..there will be some “ceremony” before it is released :)..but i also badly want to be wrong on this one..

No cartoon update today. I’m willing to bet that it progresses to:

8/10 – shrinks it
8/11 – lights it up and smokes it, while munching on a bag of Doritos and playing XBox
8/12 – pulls up the comment feed on this blog and laughs at our comments
8/13 – cites some quantum physics BS stating that our observation changed the results of this experiment

• Juggernaut93

The cartoon has been updated, he posts the update at around 6 a.m. EDT of the next day. The 8/10 cartoon will be posted tomorrow.

• MV

Ah. My bad.

• Juggernaut93

Don’t worry, there’s a lot of confusion about time zones 🙂

• Taylor H

My goal is to be refreshing WBW at just the right time so that I see the new post is up before getting the email.

It’s the least I could do, considering I’m about to get a free novel.

• Not to be disrespectful, this whole blog is a miracle, but, but, maybe, just maybe, now that everybody has already read the leaked version anyway, perhaps it would be a good idea to publish this shit sometime soonish? 🙂

• Popozinho

What are you talking about?

• Miguel Bartelsman

Maybe maybe just maybe you could be respectful of the tremendous amount of work that Tim is putting into this and not read leaked versions.

• CtG

Am I the only one who’s slightly disappointed that his packaging isn’t in the shape of a rocket? 😛

• N3vertheless

It may still be CtG it may still be.

• Albinas Bambukas

Tim is making a post, not a rocket. 🙂

• CtG

It would be nice, though. And relevant.

• James

Just think about this for a minute… Tim has got 3 people trapped in stress positions, one with an arm cut off with scissors, trapped inside a small suffocating brown and orange tube.

• Max Kraft

i’d die

• MicroMatrixx

Omg is it not today, i am going crazy.

• Joe

OOOOOHHHHH MYYY GAAAAWWWWDDDD… it’s nearly here!!!

• Frank Qi

Tim is looking for a holiday… though I haven’t read the post, I still firmly believe that he has definitely earned it!! Get some rest!! (and we will await your composing new masterpieces)

• As a huge Tesla & EV geek that thoroughly enjoyed the Tesla post, and been refreshing for the latest update ever since this status post went up… I’ve gotta say I’m a little bummed that the SpaceX post is such a production – with so many people so much more excited about SpaceX than Tesla and EVs. (then again, I did learn of WBW by being linked to the Tesla post, so there’s that.)

To me it feels like EVs are more game-changing and exciting – in the immediate future, at least – than SpaceX is. That’s not to say I won’t enjoy the hell out of indulging in a day’s worth of space geekery, of course. But I really, really wish the public at large would be more excited about Tesla and EVs – as much as they are about SpaceX. Or am I wrong, and everyone’s already digested the Tesla post? Whatever the case, everyone’s F5ing furiously… figure I may as well throw it out there and start a discussion. Maybe.

• Max Kraft

I just saw this post being edited in real life. That was so weird. A line just got removed or something.

• Max Kraft

In real time, not life, pardon.

• You mean THE INTERNET IS REAL LIFE?? 😮

• Max Kraft

What a turn of events! Holy crap!

• What, this comment?? Whoo… a little eerie feeling of being on live TV going on right here.

• Pepperice

I absolutely adored the Tesla post and despite never having heard of Tesla before and not really having an opinion on EVs I am now obsessed with them.

I’m not madly interested in SpaceX as much as I am interested in reading 40k words of the geekilicious, detail oriented, easy to understand yet fully in depth nature of Tim’s articles. I’m excited about that. He could write about geese or bellybuttons and make it interesting. So I’m sure by the end I will also be stoked about whatever SpaceX is. But I am super excited for Tesla’s “affordable” car and seeing what kind of changes that brings to the market, and the world in general. Interestingly, I heard an anecdote the other day. When you go on a tourist bus to LA and you drive up to where all of the big stars live, they’re pointing out, oh, X lives here, Y lives there. World famous names. All of the older ones have their Rolls Royces, their Ferraris and such. But every single one of the younger stars drive a Tesla. That was pretty phenomenal to me.

• Bingo! Yeah, I’m definitely looking forward to the geekitude. I also have no idea how long it must’ve taken to write that Tesla post, either… hell, it might’ve even been this long, too (it’s remarkably well done). And yeah, there’s definitely a lot to love about SpaceX – the reusable rockets would be a big one, where we wouldn’t need to “build a new car every time we want to take a road trip” anymore. Elon Musk certainly has a point about wanting to get to Mars, too. My head’s still stuck in our own atmosphere, though… I’d really like to see someone honestly take on electric aviation. A few people have dabbed in it with low(-ish) budget small airplanes, but nobody’s really tried the big ones like Tesla did with the big cars…

I’ve been an EV geek pretty much my whole life (when I was about 10, I’d heard of something about “electric cars” so I started looking for tailpipes). So of course I’d been a Tesla fan since the early years. But there’s no way I could afford a Model S – so I ended up with a “poor man’s Tesla”, a Nissan LEAF. The only part of my personality that it matches up with is being an EV, and being based on the same thing Tesla’s using – lithium batteries and a brushless motor. The silly looks and goofy “whoosh” sound, and the whole “Japanese Utopia” appeal to it is pretty awful, but it’s freakin’ electric. I had to have it. 😉

And of course, after Nissan did it (to compete with Tesla, presumably), everyone else finally got some skin in the game with their own EV, too… but they’re all about the same mediocrity (range and performance-wise). Tesla’s still the only one really “doing it” for real.

• Juggernaut93

In the TV series “Extant”, set in the future, main characters use a Tesla.

• I think the story goes that Elon invited Tim over. http://waitbutwhy.com/2015/05/elon-musk-the-worlds-raddest-man.html
“Sorry, I dropped my phone. Yes, I think I can make that work. Hm let me look at my schedule oh okay I’m free to do a call anytime between midnight and the next midnight any day in the future while I’m living”.
^ lol’d far too hard at this.

INBY its that monkey for all those who read leaked version

• GG Tim

LOL my comment about rush for leaked version got removed

Now I’m shure it will be that monkey XD

• Tim Urban

Yes I deleted it. Because the leaked draft is a much, much worse (and incomplete) version of the real post, and it’s stressful that anyone is spending time reading it. Your comment points more people to it, so the comment has to be deleted.

• Ollie

Thank for replying to this instead of just removing it, its stopped me from reading it now even though I desperately want to!

• Amit

I haven’t read it, but I have it opened in a tab just in case Tim gets hit by a bus or spontaneously decides to become a professional tap dancer or something and ends up not posting it.

• qwerty

King has spoken!

Well some people has no shame apparently.
Can’t wait to see it!

• Pedro Ferraz

I agree. It was a huge spoiler. I just clicked the link and read the title.. did not even have courage to scroll down. Even though I’m very anxious, I would not ruin my experience by reading something Tim did not intended us to read.

• Josiah Racchini

I clicked on it, but then I realized how disrespectful it would be to you to read something you didn’t want out in the world. So I closed it. Because I like you 🙂

• Sara Kilcher

Please please please make this post appear tomorrow *somehow me doesn’t think so* :). After that I’ll be on holidays for 10days with very limited internet *freaking out*..

• Ri Ri

Tim urban statistics for last 30 days:

Sleep per night: 3.5 hours
Coffee’s per day: 7-8
Change in BMI: +3
Most time spent with: Panic Monster

• Vinay Kapadia

Oh man, that knock seems either like it’s going to delay the post even more (but making it better, so I’ll gladly wait) or it’s Elon Musk himself.

• James

I thought it was just an effect on the door, and he was going to throw the post out into the world (Internet).

• Pavol Fülöp

..or the Panic Monster himself 😀

• Taylor H

“Who are you talking to right now?

Who is it you think you see?

Do you know how many words I write a year? I mean, even if I told you, you wouldn’t believe it.

Do you know what would happen if I suddenly decided to stop writing? A business big enough that it relies on your generous Patreon contributions goes belly up. Disappears! It ceases to exist without me.

No, you clearly don’t know who you’re talking to, so let me clue you in. I am not in danger, Readers. I am the danger. A guy opens his door and has his novel-length post delayed and you think that of me? No. I am the one who knocks!”

• Pedro Ferraz

Sir, you are a Genius.

• rUUd

I’ve loved reading comments and interacting with people on this post.
Kind of sad to see it come to an end.
Maybe we should have a SpaceX post launch party 😀

• miggles

or a post-SpaceX post launch party
or a Spacex post launch party, post launch of the Spacex post

• F

Yeah, it’s like it’s going to be an end of an era, this has become a part of my everyday life. However, if my sanity is to not totally erode into rubble I wouldn’t mind Tim to publish it in the near foreseeable future 😛

• rUUd

Same 😀

• This was becoming my new hangout & laugh. I’m going to miss it.

• Pepperice

It’s getting to the point where I almost feel like I will be disappointed if I see the post is up, because then I’ll have to leave it and come back when I literally have enough time (and coffee) to read the whole thing (or at least get to a memorable stop point). Here, I can dive right in and have a laugh about it 🙂

(Of course am also excited for giant post)

• Paul Steven Conyngham

After your done posting the series Tim, release it as a book.

• MicroMatrixx

Yea he should publish them.

• Uncephalized

So… tomorrow? 😀

• daniel schliesing

I’m so excited for this article!

• zabolos

I wonder what kind of animals lie behind that door… Oh wait.

• Pieter Meyvaert

Maybe opportunity knocks?

• CtG

What bothers me is that he spent all day watching a door, AND that made a guy wait all day at the door!

• Palmi

Noooo!! I need to know what happened on Tuesday!! I’m so excited for the space x post (and wait but why in general, since my recent discovery of it) that I actually check this hilarious page every day 🙂

So…Tuesday??

• Jeroen Bargeman

Only once a day? 🙂

• Juggernaut93

7:07 a.m. EDT and no updates for 8/11… uhm…

• Sara Kilcher

aaaaah, my thoughts exactly, I am seriously refreshing every 5 min

• Pedro Ferraz

I remember when I had to sroll down just a couple times to come to the comments sections..

• James

It hasn’t been posted at the usual time… Maybe tim is rushing to finish it today…

• Sara Kilcher

I so hope that this is it 😀

• Juggernaut93

Or it’s been posted later only because the strip was longer this time :/

• Windows 10

Looks like something happened

• Tiago

Soooo…. What is he waiting on?

• Sara Kilcher

no idea 🙁 BUT but but the package is already DONE… so what happens when he gets what he’s waiting on? Unwrap everything again and untie the little cute parts?

• F

What the fuck was that? Are you telling us we have to wait even longer now, Tim? Come ooonnnnn 🙁

• Sara Kilcher

OMG… update ist here… what does it mean???????

• Colm Hennessy

Wow. Confucius. That was unexpected.

• MV

Well… at least he gave us a longer update in the cartoon.

• zero_ozero

So, some force majeure came up, but apparently Tim does not tell us what it is because it would be a spoiler of sorts (???)

Whatever it is, Tim, we are all still patiently waiting. make it the way you want it to be

• Pieter Meyvaert

Maybe they are upgrading the server, to handle the immense traffic that is coming?

• DrFil

Confucius say either server upgrade (the subscription list has been sky ROCKETING…. get it?), waiting on SpaceX/Musk to read over (maybe) or an impending SpaceX announcement he talks about in the post (long shot).

• Richard Bryan

It took me a while to realize Confucius was sitting cross-legged and not happy to see Tim!

• whatsanenigma

I had the same thought and was berating myself for having a dirty mind.

• Ellen

I would love to see the website traffic just on this post with all of us refreshing it multiple times a day. Please Tim, tell whomever/whatever you’re waiting on to get their shit done 🙂

• miggles

It’s probably Musk. Good luck telling him when/how to work!

• Ellen

Yeah – I can’t imagine Tim telling Musk to “get his shit together” hahaha!

• Frank Qi

So Confucius wants to read the post, but Tim has to wait for some mysterious stuff, so at the meantime he will do something else?

I think i need to lie down and facepalm for a while……

• rUUd

You explained it well.

• Tiago

I also just noticed… Is that comic sans?

• Aletta

Comic Sans is all like… “MY TIME TO SHINE! Surely nobody’s going to give me crap about hanging out with some stick figure illustrations?”

For once, Comic Sans is being appropriate. If it keeps it off the streets (and logos, and signage, and sex offender registration websites) then let’s encourage it.

• rUUd

What is Tim waiting for? I can’t handle the suspense :'(

• Jacob Dietz

Aaargggjhhhhhhjh!!!!!!!

• PissBoy

Confucius says, “Crowded elevators smell different to dwarves.”

• Lilyburk

Few got this I guess.

• Victor
• predunuku

The fuck was that.

• Simon Bækkegaard

Why does confucius have a boner?

• Las10

not the reason, but he is sitting cross-legged.

• Lajay

This seems pretty clear to me. Something in Musk’s schedule is the holdup. And Tim is powerless to do anything about that.

• Adriano Di Gregorio

i think it has to do with the explosion of the falcon 9 on 28 june. even if the fact that it was beacuse of a faulty strut has spread, there has been no official report yet, so he might be waiting for it.

• Ri Ri

Tim says he’s waiting on some shit… to which I respond “wait, but why?”

• Las10

More like ‘Wait? But why?’

• Franciska

While we are waiting, does anyone know how I could read this post on an e-reader?

• I love the fact that Conficius redraws the door that disappeared when he leaves!

• A Friendly Dinner Table Reader

It reminds me of Harold and the Purple Crayon

• Brian Fischman

If it is anything like the other long posts (I’m looking at you AI) it will be fantastic. Can’t wait to see it. Hope it covers the future fuel options like Methane/LOX, how to refuel on Mars, etc. Maybe Elon will keep those close to the vest. I would guess we have about a snowman’s chance in hell of seeing anything about the MTC, but one can dream.

• Elisabeth

It will be way longer, almost the double of AI! 😮 AI is about 26,000 words, as this one is reaching up to 40,000.

• whatwhat

This was unexpected.

• String userName=new String();

Hmm… My guess is that something big is happening with SpaceX soon and Tim is waiting for it to happen.

• ssagg

Or: Is he waiting for Elon Musk´s aproval?

• String userName=new String();

Oh yeah, that’s probably it. Didn’t think of that.

• Ashley Wilsey

Even if the post needs to wait a bit longer, I’m sure he won’t leave us hanging as to WHY it’s stalled … Right?

• Timo

My best guess is that he used quotes from his meeting with Elon Musk, and now he (and we) has to wait for authorization.
I don’t think that the complete article has do be approved by Musk/SpaceX, but interviews usually have to.

• Ri Ri

If the SpaceX post isn’t up tomorrow, I’m going to drive my Tesla Model S off a bridge in protest 😛

• Max Kraft

Holy shit.

I wonder if he’s learning to PDF because he wants to publish his articles as e-books or something. :B

• Guido Pagan

We are at code-message level!! for me the colored square means something..

• Colm Hennessy

It’s the days of August.

The red ones are the days that have passed.

The green one is the day the article launches (?).

Going by that, it goes live on Monday.

• Pedro Ferraz

Wow nice!
Makes perfect sense. Even the weeks are separeted like in the calendar.
Monday! *o*

• predunuku

I never understood why Sunday is the first day of the week on the US calendars. Is there a rational explanation for it?

• Pepperice

Because then you get two weekends every week!

(I don’t know.)

• Victor

I’m American and I’d rather have it be Monday.

• Hdawg

Religious reasons maybe?

• James

No, it’s not that, because God rested on the 7th day of creation, and Sunday is the day of rest.

• unlike them

Actually God rested on Saturday (sabbath), so it is a holy jewish day of rest. And now it makes perfect sense that Sunday is the first day of the week. Hmm, never thought of that before..

• Max Kraft

oh yeah

• Max Kraft

Because it’s easier that way somehow.

• quadrplax

Then it’s symmetrical, and you work in the middle of the week

• Pedro Ferraz

I first thought he was defragging the article 0o

• rUUd

I can now stop refreshing this page every 1 hour or so, now that we have a date (hopefully).

• Jack Fleisher

I’m still checking every hour JUST in case.

• Max Kraft

same

• Frank Qi

For once in life we see Tim fix a release date… Praise Tim, Praise Tim!!!!

(just hoping it wont get deferred….)

• G

Where do you see the release date?

• String userName=new String();

The squares are a secret message. Each one represents a day in August. The red ones are days that have passed, and the green one is the release date. Assuming there are no more delays, this means the post will be up Monday.

• Sarah

Monday is perfect. Enjoy your weekend, invite the monkey out, he must be feeling neglected.

• Kill

Americans and your weird fetishes. Sunday is not the first day of the week, it’s the last, it’s called weekEND for a reason. Jesus wtf.

• Earl

I think most Americans would agree with you on that…

• BP

I always saw it as being more like 2 bookends. So you have one end on one side of the week and the other end on the other side, to keep the weekdays in the middle from falling, or something like that.

• Jeroen Bargeman

Please don’t forget the metric system, celsius and football.. 🙂

• Great Pierre

Do you guys really care? Like in the grand scheme of things, do you really give enough of a fuck to call it a fetish? Is your comment going to make us suddenly count in km, celsius, and call soccer football?
Also here’s a video that explains why we call football soccer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4earrCLoUcM

• Indian

The question is why you call rugby football?

• Great Pierre

American Football is a completely different sport than rugby, by the way.

• André Baptista
• Victor

Go old school Tim, use LaTex for that PDF!

• Aina

I wouldn’t do that with so many figures, LaTex is really great for text and math, but handles pictures weirdly, and in tim’s texts it’s important that the images come when they have to come. Latex will put them wherever…

• Chunger

You can tell LaTex to put the images exactly where you want. That’s the beauty of it, you can do anything you want.

• llor kcir

I don’t see anyone mentioning this but Tim posted this earlier explaining why he doesn’t release the SpaceX article. http://bit.do/SpaceX

• Simon Bækkegaard

well played…

• Whiting

Gotty! Nice.

• It all makes sense now.

• Max Kraft

Very nice. Thank you so much for the valuable information!

• nightowl

very valuable information, extremely life changing. I like your username btw

• Tom Miller

I read the above article twice in two days!

• Ri Ri

Tim, you should do a live-stream show on your YouTube channel (like a Q&A) where we tweet our questions at you 😀

• Max Kraft

gr8 idea m8 i r8 8/8 no h8, being gr8 is your f8 m8.

• Aina

So thrilled there’s going to be a PDF about this, it took me ages to get the Tesla one on paper!

• Whiting

Oooh-oooh-oooh – I broke the code – red/green squares are days of this month – a swirly calendar – first row is Sat 8/1, second is Sun 8/2 – Sat 8/8, third is Sun 8/9 through Sat 8/15 – last red square is Wed 8/12 and green square (go date?) is Mon 8/17. So maybe post goes up that day or at least the thing that’s out of his control wraps up then. Wait, I bet I’m not the first one here to figure it out…

• Whiting

Tim! How about a shout out if I’m right!?

• Whiting

Yep, somebody else beat me to it. 🙁 Just saw the posts farther below. Shout out anyway? 😉

• André Baptista

Colm Hennessy figured out before you

• Max Kraft

somebody call the CIA they found their new Senior Decipherer

• ssagg

The article was originally proposed by Elon Musk himself. He called Tim and asked him to write an article about his enterprises.
It´s not unlikelly that he wants to check it before it´s posted

• Steve

Maybe not… if you believe the recent biography, the author states Musk wanted pre-read it and add notes. Though he talked him out of it, Musk is a bit obsessive about these sort of things apparently.

I’m secretly hoping for the long shot of WBW being a vehicle to introduced the Mars Colonial Transporter, the BFR details, or some other release from spacex fun 😀

• Brian Fischman

The notion that Elon would want to review this seems control freaky to me. Hope this is bot the case. You have to trust the writer.

About the MCT stuff l, that would be awesome but I can’t see Elon disseminating that here.

• marisheba

The best way to make a PDF that doesn’t suck is to make a document in whatever publishing software you want that doesn’t suck, and then printing/exporting/saving to PDF. InDesign is best if you’re up for learning it and can get your hands on a copy (and once you know it you’ll be glad forever, comes in SO handy), but you can even use word to make nice PDFs, so long as you don’t mind bashing your head against a brick wall in frustration a few hundred thousand times.

• Luisa

even in indesign, oh god, pdf sucks. It has all sorts of bugs, and every now and then inexplicable errors. it is awful, but it’s the best we got.
kind of like democracy.

• Whiting

It makes so much sense that Elon Musk would be reviewing the final version – agree with others here who think that’s what’s going on – Elon probably asked Tim to give him the weekend.

• Nex

I think Elon Musk has better things to do. It would be possible for one of his employees to review it, but that would open the door to censorship so I don’tthink so.

• Whiting

Eh, Musk took hours to contact him, meet with him, give him a tour. So, why not feedback (not censorship) on the largest product of this interaction? Tim doesn’t “have” to change anything. If its going to be about his company – Musk cares. If I were Tim, I’d pay him the courtesy of an early release. Just saying its not crazy to think this…

• Amit

Why is the title of the book written on the back cover?

• Max Kraft

you evil genius

• CtG

The publisher only knew how to make PDFs that don’t suck.

• Phil L

Or perhaps, some kind of japanese inspired english guy, who started its book from the back to the front like those mangas.

• Dan

At this point, my browser autofills “waitbutwhy.com/2015/07/the-spacex-post-progress-meter.html” before it autofills “waitbutwhy.com”

• Max Kraft

same

• llirkcor

Here is leaked version! http://bit.ly/SpaceX

I know I have no shame LOL

• llirkcor

okay blablabla doesn’t work in Disqus. I give up

• James

Oooh, a podcast! I wonder what Tim sounds like…

• qwerty

Soo looks like it will be released 18th Tuesday 😀

• Phil L

Monday, actually! American Calendar starts on sunday, and august 1st was a saturday.

• qwerty

um last red square appeared on 14th…..

So green square will be reached on 18th,

• Jordan Fisher

well it represents yesterday, so its the 13th

• Tom Miller

Ummm, is says UPDATE – Thu 8/13

🙂

• Whiting

Just realized the question we are all struggling with now on the SpaceX post is “Wait? But why?” 😉

Keep up the good work Tim – quality over quantity always!

• Juggernaut93

Though this time we’ll have quality (I’m sure about that), but also a huge quantity!

• Whiting

Indeed – meant quantity as in volume of posts.

• Nikhil

My waitness factor for this post has been equal to my waitness factor when I was waiting for The Dark Knight Rises movie. I am sure it is the same for many people (different movie maybe). So… no pressure Tim.

• jack galler

I don’t listen to podcasts much, but I would definitely listen to a WaitButWhy podcast, which would probably be Tim rambling about random stuff for an hour. I’d be OK with that.

• Vinay Kapadia

Agreed. Never listened to podcasts before, but would totally listen to a WaitButWhy one.

• Fangirl

Not even sure what a podcast IS! But finding out asap

• Anonymouse

At first I was really confused about the squares-then I realized it’s just this month’s calendar; the first square is Aug. 1st, the last square is Aug. 31st, etc. and the red squares are days that have passed… So it looks like on the green square, the 17th, we can expect to finally read this awesome book!

• Gaurav Kumar

Yeah well me too !

• fsadfasdgfdag

CAn you delete this? It meant to be rick roll in disguise but it blew up

• Ri Ri

Hey guys, should I order the I.G. Monkey plush or the Panic Monster plush before going back to Uni?

• Tiago

I like the panic monster better, but its really your choice. Keep in mind if you get the monkey you might get distracted and the panic monster might help you. On the Elon Musk post theres a picture of Elon holding the panic monster, you should look at it, it might help you decide.

• Ri Ri

Yeah good call, I’m going to get the panic monster!!! 😀

• João Pedro Gonçalves

Podcast? Where? When?

• Gary Jones

Yo, Tim, for your next post do an in-depth study into the post-antibacterial world. A lot of people are going to die due to this before the AI revolution.

• You’re right

Sounds good. I’ll be interested

• zabolos

Is Monday going to be like New Year, in that Australians go first and we only get to hear it on the internet until it is our turn several hours later?

• Aletta

New Zealand gets New Years before Australia, but you don’t hear anything from us because we don’t believe in spoilers. So you’re welcome.

• Harshyt Goel

Am I the only one who initially thought Confucius sat down with a massive boner?

• He’s painting Mars now…….

• ssagg

So, maybe some anouncement about the MCT or something else related to mars?

• JCQ

Hey Tim, only if you take a real momen and just explain to us WTF happens!

• Zanderosity

So, is this coming out at some time on actual Monday or is it coming out on Tuesday at 6 AM EST?

• Siddharth Agarwal

Start writing comics!!!

• Siddharth Agarwal

What is happening ? Can anyone explain?

• Tiago

Tim finished the post, but he’s waiting on something that’s out of his control to be able to post it. Maybe its Musk proofreading it, maybe its something else. The point being, he can’t really do anything so that’s why you see him reading and painting to pass time. On the post the squares represent the august calendar, indicating that the post will be published on Monday the 17th, since that is where the green square is.

• Siddharth Agarwal

Thanks

• Guest

Maybe Musk/SpaceX are planning to make an announcement of some kind on Monday, and they let Tim in on the secret so he can release his post, which may contain some of that new info, alongside it? Publicity and all that.

• Pepperice

So I found a link to Tim’s previous blog on the FAQ page comment thread. It’s a nice little time filler while we wait 🙂 http://timurban.blogspot.de/ (Ignore the de ending. It just adds whatever your local one is for some reason.)

• Mohsin Ismail

This is amazing. It’s like a different era Tim who wasn’t concerned with writing long articles on interesting science-y topics and instead just wrote and drew about random shit…but it’s still completely entertaining. My impatience for the SpaceX post went WAY down after visiting his old blog.

• Pepperice

There are so many beautiful moments on this blog back in 2005. Some of my favourite quotes:

“In Europe now, they’ve combined the video iPod and Blackberry phone into one device, called the G3. This apparently replaces your phone, laptop, iPod, TV, DVD player, digital camera, internet, external hard drive, alarm clock, calculator, road navigator, and Playstation, and it’s the size of an iPod. And frankly, I think that’s tubular.”

(I can find no record of this G3, and suspect it’s a typo. 3G?)

“One of my main goals in life is to be the first Tim Urban on the list of search results on google.”

You made it, friend.

• qwerty

Yep, when I typed Tim Urban into google he was first link. Next one was some singer :p

• David

Google has targeted results based on your search and browser history, so it makes sense that he would be the first result for readers of Wait But Why. If you search him on an engine that does not have targeted results (such as DuckDuckGo), he isn’t the first result.

I know his goal was specific to Google. But there very well could be quite a number of users in which he would not be the first result (i.e. if the person were really into American Idol).

• Ashley Wilsey

I want to high-five you right now … and then strangle you because I can’t seem to stop reading. On the other hand, this is the best distraction yet.

• Find it

Tim! This spoils the giraffe thing. Not fair. :(((

• Ri Ri

Tim Urban for President 2016

• Kibrom Fesseha

Who’s his running mate?

• Taylor Marks

SpaceX will be laying out their roadmap for a manned trip to Mars and maybe unveil some new hardware on Monday related to that, thus the image of him wrapping a painting of Mars around the whole blog post?

• jack galler

No, that’s probably why he has to wait to post the post! It all makes since now!

• Colm Hennessy

So… In the first image of Mars, there’s a line of Martian soil (maybe) coming out of Mars.

In the second image, if you zoom in, there’s a bunch of ships (with solar panels deployed) descending on Mars.

The second image is likely relating to colonisation. Any ideas what the first one is about?

• Juggernaut93

I think it’s the brush.

• Colm Hennessy

That would make sense.

• Pepperice

It’s not a brush. The bit which looks like a hand is way out of proportion. Plus if you zoom in, it’s not, the stick figure is holding a pen of some sort.

• Jack Fleisher

1 day remaining…

• Ben

“Speaking of the moon, I’m really intent on going there at some point. I just need it to become a commercial thing before I die. I’ll shell out any kind of money. I’ll blow through my kids’ college funds or my retirement fund. I’ll sell my liver. I just want to go to the moon. I’m picturing that at some point they’ll have a big resort up there, with normal Earth-level oxygen pumped in. So your ship lands and brings you directly into the resort. Everything is normal inside the resort dome except the incredibly fun gravity difference. So they’ll have all these fun sports and exercise rooms and other activities that are fun with less gravity. Then they’ll have options for you to take a “moon excursion” and you’ll train all day with an instructor about how to use your suit and all the emergency hand signals and stuff, and then the instructor will take a group outside the resort for a hike or something. Kind of like going scuba diving. This will happen, I just hope it’s before I’m dead.” – Tim Urban. 2008

Tim. I’m afraid I must insist that you bring this up in your next conversation with Elon Musk.

• Feeling like old friends

Making me wonder- does/would elon musk enjoy UTT too?

• Pierre Thalamy

It’s been Monday for 1 hour where I live already, but considering my time difference with Tim’s time, damn, today will be long as hell! I’m sure all europeans readers can relate to this.

• Pepperice

I think we are in the same time zone 😉

The post should go up around 10am for us, if I calculated it correctly.

• Las10

Asians too. In fact the wait is longer.

• AJ

no sunday update?

• Max Kraft

too early

• nightowl

It’s coming!! TODAY! (its monday here in Asia and Tim posts around 6p.m.) YAY

• CC

Tim posts around 6pm in Asia for the previous day in the US. Today’s 6pm post will be for Sunday 8/16 Pacific time, which means the post will be released probably within 24h of that

• Victor

Are those satellites drawn on Mars? So is SpaceX going to announce that it is planning on sending satellites to the Mars? Ugh I need to know.

• Max Kraft

those satellites are colonization ships that will land on mars.

• begzy

I took a day off tomorrow so I can contemplate whole day. And its raining here, perfect time for reading!

• rUUd

INBY its tomorrow 😀

• rUUD

Hey! You stole my name!

• Tim Urban

Boom!

• Gary Jones

Thanks Tim! After Elon is done, research the prospect of the post-antibacterial world. It isn’t looking rosy.

• Juggernaut93

It’s not completely done, there should be a fourth part.

• Gary Jones

Do you have any idea what it would be about?

• Dulcie

SolarCity, perhaps?

• Blrp

He already did this thing: http://waitbutwhy.com/2015/06/the-deal-with-solar.html

On last post, from first post: “There are a lot of things about Musk that make him so successful, but I do think there’s a “secret sauce” that puts Musk in a different league from even the other renowned billionaires of our time. I have a theory about what that is, which has to do with the way Musk thinks, the way that he reasons through problems, and the way he views the world. As this series continues, think about this, and we’ll discuss a lot more in the last post.”

• Juggernaut93

Someone was thinking about some kind of wrap-up post.

• nightowl

OH MY GOD thank you tim I am finished with the post finally. It was truly amazing be happy and take a break pleaseee

• Renjith Joseph

I have three exams left, ending on Wednesday. :'( Hope the audio is up by then. Thanks for the hard work, Tim.

• I am way cool

Right before bedtime and I’ve just listened to the sound Jupiter makes, and watched that stressful asteroid video. I might just go eat some cheese now for good measure. Night night, sweet planet. Good job, Tim.

• maximkazhenkov11 .

Oh my god Tim, you actually delivered on time! Good job! (No sarcasm intended; I know from personal experience how hard that monkey hits 😉

• Radu Diaconescu

And so our Watch ends.

• Max Kraft

THANK YOU SO MUCH TIM!

• quadrplax

Checking this page became a daily habit, I’m going to miss coming here. Off to read a novel now.

• ezpeezy

LOL

• Vivid

Tim, can you please write a post on Virtual Reality, including all about Oculus Rift and yet to come brain-computer interface? It would be great, and I think many readers would like that. I am not sure.

• Tim Urban

It’s been in the queue for a while. Definitely needs to be a post.

• Kurnia Jayanto

YESSSS!!!

• Juggernaut93

That’s great!

Wow! Thank you. Will be waiting patiently for that post.
You are doing an amazing job! 🙂

• Marko

I’m so gonna miss the progress meter. But great job, Tim! Hope you now have time for a breather. I’m off to enjoying SpaceX stuff 🙂

• Harpreet Singh Sandhu

you deserve a extended vacation my friend..

• predunuku

No update today? 🙁

• Chunger

I was kinda hoping he keeps updating this with post-publishing tasks

• Dominic D.

He just did.

• Brian

Apologies if this has been addressed and I just missed it, but what was the thing that was out of Tim’s control? I was expecting some kind of big Space-X announcement Sunday or Monday that couldn’t have been leaked ahead of time, but I can’t seem to find anything. Admittedly, I didn’t look too hard, but figured this would be the best place to get a quick answer if anyone knew.

• predunuku

Probably just waited for Musk to read and approve the post

• Brian

I suppose that’s possible, but I was under the impression that these posts weren’t subject to Musk’s approval. Like if Tim learned all there was to know about SpaceX and ended up saying “Yeah, it’s a nice idea but nothing to get excited about after all” then Elon Musk couldn’t stop Tim from posting. It also seemed like an oddly specific day. Like, “Ok, it’s Wednesday and the post is done, but I can’t post it yet for some reason, but I know I will be able to post it on Monday.”

• James

Maybe he needed to get approval for the photos he took of the spaceX factory, because the government class it as ‘weapons technology’.

• James

Enjoy the ice cream Tim!

• CtG

I’m so glad I still check this place. 😀

• Graham

Waittttt I JUST got what the lightbulb was in the 7/29 comic. He had alien characters and realized that those drawings would be perfect for them! Or maybe those drawings are what gave him the idea to include the aliens in the post. Love it!

• Bug

Interesting but Musk ask one thing. Did Elon have to approve before posting?

• Rich1983

Tim, have you thought about creating a discussion forum? Comments sections are alright, but a central place for discussion on all manner of topics would be nicer. Based on this comments section, I think the community you’ve built is large enough and engaged enough to get active participation. A forum may increase traffic for this site, giving people another reason to come back on a regular basis. Plus, probably most of the people who come here enjoy learning and this would make communication easier and afford everyone more opportunities to learn from one another about the kinds of topics we like reading from you. I’m sure you could find volunteers from the wealth of fans who would be capable and willing to moderate it so that maintenance wouldn’t drain your time. Thanks for all of your hard work. I’ve learned a lot thanks to your efforts!

• Las10

There is a ‘Dinner Table’ already existing, but yes, it could be a Tim-topic thread in the Forums you are talking about. I’d love to be a part of this Forum.

• Tim Urban

Yes, definitely. It’s on the list of things I really want to do. Such a long list.

• Teen Icarus

Ok, tim – I’ve now reread everything on your site – when can we expect another brilliant post?
