An Actually-Useful World Cup Schedule

When it comes to big international sporting events with dozens of games over a bunch of days, all I ever want is a clear, concise schedule that tells me when all the games are happening and what channels they’re on.

It doesn’t seem like that much to ask. And yet, with the World Cup about to start, neither espn.com nor fifa.com is remotely accomplishing this—so we’ve taken things into our own hands.

Below are two printable World Cup schedules—the first goes day by day, the second goes team by team.

If you’re like us, you’re excited about the World Cup but know almost nothing about the teams, so we’ve added in a few things to orient you, like the key player on each team and each team’s ranking, out of 32. These will get you through the group rounds, which makes up the first two weeks of the World Cup (click each schedule to see the full-sized version and print).

Games start on Thursday. Get excited, even if you’re not a sports fan—nothing is more fun than the World Cup.

That’s similar to what the usual schedules look like in Germany.
Özil is not the key player in any way btw. It’s Müller or Reus, if Reus can play that is.

This is so helpful! Thank you.

One small quibble: in the first schedule, you listed the June 15 Argentina x Bosnia Herzegovina match as being part of group B, when really they are in group F.

Thank you for putting this together – I was just looking for a schedule of games and couldn’t find one!

Wonderful, thank you. I’ve coached 15 kids teams so far and have helped spread and inspire the passion of soccer each time. Hope the ref’s call it well. GOOD LUCK ! U_S_A !! U S A !!!! U S A !!!!!!

Perfect. I was on fifa and espn yesterday trying to find something like this. Thanks for putting this together. BTW, the fermi paradox article was fantastic.

Have you ever heard of Ronaldo/Messi? No, perhaps look into them, might be the best two players in the world. Which makes them the most important players in their respective squads…? No? Maybe that’s just me?

Neymar, Xavi, Iniesta, heard of them? Perhaps Suarez then, scored the most goals in the BPL this season, might be the most important player of Uruguay instead of a striker who played at the wing at PSG…

Good point, FootballFantheWorld. Good point. We took that whole list from The Bleacher Report (as sighted above), and to them “Most Important Player” seems to mean the player whose performance is critical to victory (assuming the biggest stars will automatically play well).

We’re realizing that this is a misleading list, so we replaced it with their list of “Key Players” from last week, which is a more accurate representation of who’s the best on each team.

Not sure why the nations’ rankings shown in these schedules are different from what they are with FIFA?

      They commented on this above:

“We decided to use the Las Vegas “odds to win the tournament” to rank the teams instead of FIFA’s official ranking. The gambling world is on the razor edge of new developments and we think their rankings are likely to be more accurate.”

Don’t you mean the time zone is EDT (eastern daylight saving time), not EST (eastern standard time) since daylight saving time started up in the U.S. a few months ago?

Also any tips on websites to pirate this on, for those of us too poor for cable TV subscriptions? I’ll check out first row sports dot eu, but i’m always on the lookout for backups when those guys flunk out or spam me with too many weird “install this ONE desktop app to get infinite HD streaming pirated shit and increase your penis length by 12 inches! Doctors AND comcast hate this app!” type ads.

EST is Eastern Standard Time. We’re currently in Daylight Savings. So, should the day by day schedule read “Time (EDT)” or do we need to adjust by adding an hour?

Just wanted to point out that Wait But Why is posting this just months after an epic post about why being a sports fan is kinda crazy.
